Chapter 45

Kai

My heart stuttered at the sight of a sleeping Grams, pale jeans soaked with dark red blood, white silk shirt torn open and then closed haphazardly so I could see a hint of her lace-edged bra, the color of which was now unrecognizable what with all the blood.

Apparently, she’d not needed either Nerina or me, and now the Ancient was conspicuously absent from the storeroom-library.

I walked quickly over to Grams’ side and sank down beside her, reaching hurriedly to rearrange her shirt to preserve her modesty as Logan drew up behind me. I was desperate to know how she was and if the splinter was still embedded inside her chest, but I forced myself to wait.

Grams opened her eyes and chuckled, her chest heaving, “Thank you, dear. Although I believe the young man is familiar with women’s undergarments.”

I lifted an eyebrow. “I’m pretty sure he is, Grandmother. We’d just rather ensure he isn’t familiar with yours.”

Logan chuckled and sank beside me, his warmth resting against my knees as the pair of us doted on Grams. Now he smirked and cocked a jaw at me. “See, Ivy. Maybe it’s best we don’t make her jealous. Already she thinks the sight of your underthings are going to make me fall deeply in love with you.”

I made a rude sound while Grams barked a rather unhealthy-sounding laugh. “You are right, young man. I don’t think she can handle losing her beau to an older woman.”

I sputtered a laugh and reached for her hand. “Grams, really. You were doing so well.”

She frowned. “What did I do wrong?” she asked, tone a little confused and a little more put out.

With an inelegant snort, I said, “Nobody but old fogies use the word beau.”

Beside me Logan coughed, then out of the side of his mouth he said, “Nobody but old fogies use the word fogies.”

I rolled my eyes. “Who do you think I learned the word from?”

“Hey, young people. I’m still here you know.”

I grinned, not in the least bit contrite as I said, “We know, Grams. Now can you please update us on your condition?”

Grams smiled gently, looking from my face to Logan’s. “Don’t you two worry about a thing. This old woman has a few more years left in her yet.”

“And then some,” I muttered under my breath.

If Grams heard me, she didn’t let on. Instead, she waved us off and said, “Go now, and leave me for a bit. I need a few moments to gather my thoughts.”

I wanted to say something smart, but I got to my feet and left the room, Logan following in my wake and closing the door softly behind him.

I glanced at him, knowing he wanted to talk, needing to hear what he had to say, but we didn’t have the time, and Natasha’s hall wasn’t the place. And so, neither of us spoke as we headed to the kitchen where the sounds of conversation drifted to us.
